Few technologies have provoked as much debate as1 artificial intelligence. While optimists maintain that it will generate more employment than it eliminates, sceptics warn of mass job losses, particularly among office and administrative workers. In my view, both outcomes are possible, and which one prevails will depend largely on2 how governments and businesses respond.
Those who fear widespread unemployment point to the speed at which AI is already automating routine cognitive tasks. Customer service chatbots, automated bookkeeping software and translation tools can now perform work that once required entire teams. In a country such as Vietnam, where many young graduates start their careers in call centres or back-office roles, this poses a genuine threat, since these are precisely the positions3 most easily replaced.
Nevertheless, history suggests that technological change tends to transform work rather than abolish it4. Just as the spread of the internet gave rise to professions that did not previously exist, from digital marketing to app development, AI is already creating demand for data annotators, AI trainers and specialists who can integrate these tools into existing businesses. Moreover, by reducing the cost of many services, AI may enable small firms to expand and hire more staff.
In conclusion, although AI will undoubtedly displace certain jobs, I believe it is likely to create more opportunities than it destroys in the long run, provided that workers are given access to retraining5. The real challenge is therefore not the technology itself but ensuring that the transition is managed fairly and that no group is left behind.
