In Vietnam, an increasing number of graduates1 are choosing to continue straight on to a master's degree. While some see this as the fastest route to a good career, others argue that young people should gain work experience first. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I support the second2.
On the one hand, studying for a master's degree immediately has clear benefits. Graduates are still used to academic life, so it is easier for them to keep studying than to return years later. Furthermore, in some fields, such as research or university teaching3, a postgraduate qualification is essential from the start.
On the other hand, starting work first allows young people to discover what they really want. For instance, a business graduate who spends two years in a logistics company may realise that supply chain management, rather than general business4, is her real interest. Her later master's degree will then be far more focused. In addition, many employers now offer to pay for postgraduate courses, which reduces the financial burden5.
In conclusion, although an immediate master's degree suits those entering academic careers, I believe most graduates benefit more from working first, because experience helps them choose the right course and apply what they learn.
