Although video-conferencing platforms have made it possible to negotiate a contract without leaving one's desk, business travel has far from disappeared1. This essay argues that while online meetings are adequate for routine communication, the advantages of meeting in person still outweigh the drawbacks when significant relationships or deals are at stake2.
The principal advantage of travelling to meet partners is the trust it builds. A shared meal or a factory tour reveals far more about a potential partner than a carefully managed video call, and in many Asian business cultures, including Vietnam's, personal rapport often precedes any formal agreement3. Moreover, informal conversations during a visit frequently surface problems or opportunities that would never appear on a meeting agenda. For instance, a Hanoi furniture exporter may only grasp a buyer's real quality expectations after walking through its warehouse in Osaka.
That said, the costs of business travel are undeniable. Flights, hotels and lost working hours can make a single overseas trip more expensive than a year's subscription to a conferencing service. Frequent travel also takes a toll on4 employees' health and family life, and its carbon footprint is increasingly difficult to justify to environmentally conscious clients. As a result, many firms now require managers to make a written case for every overseas trip before it is approved.
In conclusion, online meetings are clearly the more efficient option for regular updates and internal discussions. Nevertheless, for building new partnerships or resolving sensitive disputes, the benefits of face-to-face contact justify the expense, provided that companies travel selectively rather than by default5.
- 1has far from disappeared — “far from + V3/adj” = còn lâu mới — phủ định mạnh, văn phong học thuật.
- 2when significant relationships or deals are at stake — “at stake” = bị đe doạ / đang được đặt cược — giới hạn rõ phạm vi quan điểm.
- 3personal rapport often precedes any formal agreement — Từ vựng chính xác (rapport, precede) + gắn với văn hoá kinh doanh Việt Nam.
- 4takes a toll on — “take a toll on” = gây tổn hại dần dần cho — collocation hay cho phần nhược điểm.
- 5provided that companies travel selectively rather than by default — Kết bằng điều kiện rõ ràng; “by default” = theo thói quen, mặc định.
