AMany employees confuse being assertive with being rude, so they stay quiet about a problem at work rather than risk sounding difficult, even when speaking up clearly could have solved the issue much sooner.
BAssertive communication simply means stating a need or opinion clearly and calmly, without attacking the other person. Saying "I need this file by noon to finish my part" is assertive, while staying silent and feeling frustrated is not.
CA useful structure for a difficult message is stating the fact first, then the effect, then the request: "The file was late yesterday, which delayed my part, so could we agree on a clearer deadline going forward?"
DPractising this kind of phrase in low-stakes situations first, such as a small scheduling issue, makes it easier to use the same calm, direct style later when something more important is actually on the line.
