ABuilding a professional network does not only happen at conferences; a simple message sent directly to someone working in an interesting role, asking for a short conversation rather than a job, can open doors that formal events rarely do.
BThis kind of conversation, often called an informational interview, works best when the person asking has a specific, genuine question, such as what a typical week in that role actually looks like, rather than a vague request to "pick your brain."
CKeeping the conversation short, usually fifteen to twenty minutes, and respecting the other person's time shows professionalism and makes them far more likely to agree to a similar favour again in the future, or to recommend someone else do the same.
DA short thank-you message afterwards, mentioning one specific thing learned from the conversation, helps the connection last well beyond that single meeting, turning a one-time favour into an ongoing professional relationship.
