AVoice assistants built into phones and small speakers have become part of daily life for many families. People use them to set timers, play music, check the weather, or add items to a shopping list, simply by speaking a short command aloud.
BThese devices appeal to busy households because they free up hands during cooking or driving. Older adults and people with limited mobility often find voice control easier than typing on a small screen, since a spoken request takes only a few seconds.
CNot everyone is comfortable with the technology, however. Voice assistants must listen constantly for a wake word, and some users worry that private conversations could be recorded or stored by the companies that make these devices, even by accident.
DMakers of voice assistants say they are improving privacy settings and giving users more control over stored recordings. Experts agree that clear rules are still needed before people can fully trust a device that is always listening in their home.
