ASitting next to a stranger on a long business flight sometimes leads to an unexpected conversation, especially during a delay or while waiting for food service, when there is simply nothing else to do for a while.
BA simple, neutral question like "business or pleasure?" or a comment about the flight itself is usually a safe way to start, without accidentally touching a topic the other person might not want to discuss on a plane.
CReading the other person's body language matters too. Someone who answers briefly and goes back to their book or headphones is usually signalling that they would rather not continue the conversation, and that preference should be respected.
