ACity life brings constant background noise: traffic, construction, sirens, and crowds. Long-term exposure to this noise is no longer considered merely annoying; researchers increasingly link it to raised stress levels and disturbed sleep among residents who cannot escape it.
BUrban planners have started treating noise as seriously as air pollution. Some cities now map noise levels street by street, identifying the loudest areas so they can prioritize soundproof windows, quieter road surfaces, or barriers along busy highways near homes.
CNot all noise reduction is expensive. Planting trees and shrubs along streets can absorb some sound, and simply rerouting heavy trucks away from residential areas during the night has measurably lowered noise complaints in several cities that tried it.
DResidents themselves remain divided on how much change they want. Some welcome quieter streets, while others worry that noise restrictions could limit nightlife, construction schedules, or public events that give a city its lively character.
